Why Gel Polish and Enhancements aren’t for kids

At Plum Natural Nail and Skin Spa, we’re committed to providing high-quality services that prioritize the health and safety of every client. When it comes to children under 12, we’ve made the decision to limit our services to classic laquer only. These policies are in place to protect the natural development of their nails and prevent potential long-term issues.

  • Fragile Nails: Before puberty, nails are still in the developmental stage, making them naturally thinner, softer, and more flexible compared to adult nails. This fragility means they are less capable of withstanding the stresses caused by enhancements or gel polish applications. Not only can this effect the longevity of the product application, but could possibly lead to nail damage.

  • Risk of Lifelong Damage: Children under 12 may be more likely to pick, peel, or bite at nail polish or enhancements, especially if they feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable. This can result in the nail product being forcefully removed, which could cause trauma to the nail bed or damage the nail matrix—the area responsible for nail growth. Repeated trauma can lead to issues such as ridges, thinning, or permanent deformities in the nails as they continue to grow

  • Skin Sensitivity and Allergies: Younger children have thinner skin and less developed immune systems, making them more susceptible to allergic reactions to nail products, especially during soak-off processes.

  • Pain from Gel Lights: During the LED curing process, gel polish undergoes a chemical reaction called polymerization, where the gel hardens as it is exposed to intense light. This process generates heat, which can sometimes create a burning or stinging sensation on the nail plate. For children with thinner, more delicate nails, this heat is more noticeable because there is less nail thickness to act as a buffer between the nail plate and the sensitive nail bed underneath.

  • General Unsuitability: Gel polish and Gel-X nails require proper aftercare and attention.. Children may not have the discipline or awareness to maintain their nails properly, leading to quicker wear, peeling, or lifting. Improper care can also increase the risk of infection if lifted edges trap moisture or bacteria.

Our goal is to prioritize the long-term health and safety of young clients’ nails and skin. We’d love to have you and your little ones visit us any time, just schedule a Petit Service for those 12 and under!
